Finished Fiddlehead Mittens -(I would say this is the last of their pictures but I plan on taking them to SAFF for my "Taking Pictures of Your Projects" class with Franklin Habit). I just love them and the color work is fun to do. The liners went pretty quickly but were boring. I didn't take enough care with the size but they work. I will do better on my next pair - now to pick out the pattern!
I seem to have activities scheduled almost every weekend until the end of October! I am not sure why I am so surprised since I did all the scheduling/committing but I am. Yesterday was a whole day of basket weaving. I took a class organized by a spinning guild member (thank you Mina!). Started the process at 10:00 and stayed until it was finished at about 6:00.
The yarn with the basket is Spunky Eclectic Apr ‘13 - Seashells - oatmeal BFL spun single for Taygete, one of Rosemary Hill's lovely shawl patterns. Just started the second fiber for that pattern,

The 4 oz on the left is Spunky Eclectic "Not so Seaworthy" Wenslydale.
I am combining 2 colorways into one yarn to knit the yolk on the Vine Yoke sweater, Lot 86 will be the body. So far only a picture of the 2 fibers drafted together. I took the pictures on a beautiful day spinning at a B&B with some Spinning Guild friends last weekend.
It has been a busy summer with a busy Fall ahead so I had better catch up now! I met my final TdF goal of a minimum of one hour spinning on work days and 2 hours on non work days. My pile of fiber was over ambitious as usual and still no picture of finished yarn!
My lovely niece was married last weekend - time leading up to that event was stretched thin. Pictured with her husband on the ship that was the venue. She and her husband are now on their way back to Korea where they both teach English. I love having before pictures of my planned fibers-to-spin and after pictures with the yarn in place of the fiber. This year I am starting with the Southern Cross Fiber (back left) that I started spinning over a year ago for a sweater - only got a partial bobbin spun then the project ended up getting pushed off my radar. The Southern Cross Fiber (back right) is a possibility for the sweater as well. Vine Yoke Cardigan by Ysolda Teague is the sweater I want to knit from these yarns. I am using Shibui Silk Cloud in Fjord as the warp set at 8 epi. It is 60% mohair so very "sticky" yarn but so so soft and lovely! The warp is bamboo Xie from South West Trading Company, pictured in the cone. I always love MDS&W ! I get to visit with cousins and extended family, enjoy the fair and then the "oooohing and ahhhing" over all our purchases after. Such a satisfying weekend! This year we had the best ever weather - sunny but cool enough to wear a wool shawl in the morning at least. I am so use to being too hot at this event. For the first time at MDS&W I took a class. It was with Maggie Casey (pictured with me above), who was so knowledgeable, which I expected but also so charming! What a great teacher, her quiet, relaxed manner while providing instruction made her class one that I not only learned a lot from but that I totally enjoyed. I do feel that my spinning skills have expanded to include "Big and Lofty Yarns". I have my cousin Elaine to thank for the pictures with Maggie. Elaine brought her camera and suggested the picture. I am so happy she did! Samples from the class below you can see the progression. My defalt spinning is is the purple to the "spin the biggest, lofy yarn you can" in the burnt orange.
I kept my purchases down by being in class all morning on Saturday and having to drive home on Sunday, so no second day to the festival. I loved the picture used this year so got that lovely big tote, can retire my shoe box travel lazy Kate now that I have the Katie-a-go-go, needed the fleece scrub to finish up the breed study club I have piled up in one of my piles at home, and just couldn't leave without a mug! The small bowl (love using them for spices when cooking) was just too tempting.
On the spinning front - still working on the second 6 oz. that is part of my Combo/Extreme Plying project and can't wait to practice what I learned in Maggie Casey's class. Nothing new in knitting or weaving. Fiddlehead Mittens are progressing slowly as is my Tulip Wrap - of course I have plans for what is next! My spinning guild - Spinner's Web - holds 2 spinning retreats a year. Last year I went to the fall retreat for the first time and had such a great weekend I signed right up for the Spring Retreat last weekend. Another great weekend of spinning and laughing and eating! We had perfect weather, spent Saturday afternoon outside spinning. The picture above is part of the group, the picture below - the rest. I can't wait for our fall retreat!
I managed to finish spinning the singles for my 2013 Combo/Extreme playing project. Monday night after work I plied - not an easy ply either. I held all three singles together and n plied. The result is a 9 ply. I don't think I would choose to do it again but it was interesting!
A close up of the finished fiber - not washed yet, about worsted wt.
Last post I started with a group picture of all the yarns I would be using in my Fiddlehead mittens. I have finished one shell (still need to knit the liner mitten, yarns for liner in the picture) and I am so pleased with it! The second is started - next winter I am going to have such warm hands!
I have projects started on my 3 small looms too. The sample I had on the Hocket loom in the last post is now a wrap in progress, my Tulip Wrap, on my Harp:

On my Cricket I have the last weaving club I received from Spunky Eclectic. I have done leno before but with wool. This is linen and it looked spectacular in progess. It is now finished, wore it to spinning guild yesterday! The finished project looks great. There will be more of these woven I am sure!

On my new Inkle loom I have a starter project. I am not sure if I will really like weaving on this loom. I think I need to check some you tube videos and see if something needs adjusting but the band itself is working out just fine.

Spinning has slowed down with all these other project going but I need to get back to my combo/extreme plying project to finish up before the April 30th deadline.
Enjoy the beautiful spring! MDS&W is coming up soon.Lindahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09606687719768606817noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1177685125001431891.post-36707760651692230872013-03-28T11:50:00.000-04:002013-03-28T11:50:52.088-04:00Spring and new beginnings
Isn't that a lovely group of yarns! All spun by me out of Southern Cross Fibre roving and batts except for the Silk Cloud by Shibui purchased at Gosh Yarn It! That is the bright green fuzzy one in the top left corner. I will be using that, held with Southern Cross Fiber "Boogie Wonderland" 2 ply, for the liner mitten. The larger semi sold bright green three ply in the center (all the rest of the fibers are Southern Cross Fibre) "Banksia" will be the background for the fiddlesticks which will be knitted out of the remaining 5 3 ply balls. I am really excited to see this project completed! I am swatching now - hope third swatch is a go!

I actually finished warping up for this project on my Harp but I love this picture of my sampling process on my Hockett Loom. It does 8 epi which was too wide a set for my plans, so I used the white weft (which I didn't like with the lovely Ty-Dy Cotton by Knit one Crochet Too I bought at Gosh Yarn It!) to pull the warp in to check out 10 epi with a thinner, darker color weft, Xie Bamboo also purchased at GYI! Bingo! The Xie for the weft is just a perfect color that holds the warp but shows allows the warp colors to shine through. Love it. I am naming the project Tulip Wrap because the colors in the Ty-Dy remind me of the tulips pictured on a postcard I got for my sister when I was visiting Tuileries Gardens in Paris. That was a wonderful trip!

Finally my newest too - an Inkle loom. I have been wanting one and the right size & price appeared in one of the used tool groups on ravelry. Can't wait to get started with it!
The last 2 posts have focused on weaving but there has been spinning going on too. Above is a good picture of "Banksia" Southern Cross Fiber 60% BFL/40% Tencelfrom July 2012 Batt Club. It was a wonderful spin. Ended up with 202 yarnds of 3 ply and 202 yarns of 2 ply. The 3 ply will be the background for my Fiddlehead mittens. Knitting post soon to come!

I have been trying to spin out of my comfort zone and have 2 "big and lofty" yarns as a result. Spunky Eclectic Cotswald "Eye of the Peacock"; 2 ply, 69 yards, 4-6 wpi Jan 2013 Club in the top left, top right is my first spin from the fleece I bought from Karen at Endless Mt. Fiber Festival in 2012. I had it processed into roving. It is lovely to spin. Bottom right is "Summer's End" Spunky Eclectic, Superwash Merino, 119 yards that I spun as part of the Extreme Plying spin along in Southern Cross Fiber on ravelry. It is what we are calling M Ply. First I spun the fiber into 2 singles - plyed them for a 2 ply then N plied. The result is a cable yarn (6 plys) and has a nice texture. Makes it hard to see how uneven the singles in the 2 play are!
Finally, my next spin. I am doing Combo SAL 2013 ravelry Spunky Club with fibers from 3 dyers on 3 different fibers - on top SE Merino/Bamboo Rayon “Dinosaur”, bottom left
Southern Cross Fibre Polwarth “Kakadu”, Bottom right Hello Yarn BFL
“Scorch”. My plan is to do extreme spinning with these as well - I will N ply the three singles, that will be a 9 ply!
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/15847685@N02/8555340339/" title="2013 comb 1 - Top SE Merino/Bamboo Rayon "Dinosaur" , bottom left Southern Cross Fibre Polwarth "Kakadu", Bottom right Hello Yarn BFL "Scorch" by lgmartist, on Flickr"><img alt="2013 comb 1 - Top SE Merino/Bamboo Rayon "Dinosaur" , bottom left Southern Cross Fibre Polwarth "Kakadu", Bottom right Hello Yarn BFL "Scorch"" height="435" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8514/8555340339_9533cd8255.jpg" width="500" />

Here are all those fibers mixed together in a better picture - actually half of the Kakadu is not there, I stripped the roving into 2 pieces and have one partially spun already!

I am off to MD to visit with family this weekend - knitting will happen too!Lindahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09606687719768606817noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1177685125001431891.post-53399792019652850732013-03-18T15:29:00.001-04:002013-03-18T15:29:50.336-04:00Log Cabin Weaving
I have always loved this pattern and planning for a class gives me permission to do samples. I wanted to show the effect of different wt yarn with the same set and the look of the log cabin pattern in squares, rectangles and different color combinations. My first was 2 small guest towels. I have Euroflax 8/2 lace weight purchased at Gosh Yarn It sale on spec. In my first trial I have it waped using a 12 dent reed on my Cricket, a little over 9 inches wide and 48 inches long. The towel on the left has the weft yarn held double, the towel on the right has the same yarn held single in the weft.

I wove another 2 towels using Euroflax, the only change was to warp double (still used the 12 dent reed). As with my first set, one has the weft woven double - the second single. No picture of those yet. I want to try a doubled Euroflax warp with a 10 dent reed too. In addition to the different feel, the Log Pattern design is more prominent when both the warp and the weft is held double.

On my Harp, I warped with worsted wt. cotton using the 8 dent reed.

The class went well, I am excited to see the results!
Here is my finished pillow out of handspun - interesting how different the sides look!
I have started teaching some rigid heddle classes at Gosh Yarn It. I really enjoy using rigid heddle looms and often have both my 10 inch Cricket and my 16 inch Harp going at the same time. So, to do some catch up. The hounds tooth pattern was used for the first Weaving Class.

I did mine in worsted wt, the black is commercial the variegated is handspun using an 8 dent heddle and very light beat. It washed up to be very soft and drapy.

I had some bulky handspun again from Spunky Eclectic, "Eating Maine" Swaledale. I wove some fabric with 3 ply Indian Warp I had purchased from the Mannings for a little seat cushion. Something soft between me and metal folding chairs!

Off the loom and washed:

The cushion is all made but no photo yet!
Finally got a picture of my spa cloth experiment - five spa cloths each a little different:

Oh, here is the first scarf project with the yarn that came with my Cricket!:

More weaving to come!Lindahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09606687719768606817noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1177685125001431891.post-72949681165677846322013-02-06T10:15:00.001-05:002013-02-06T10:15:26.353-05:00January round up
My SnoBuddies - loved knitting them over the Christmas/New Years break. These are the three I kept. They really appealed to the doll lover in me. I had to control my urge to knit a wardrobe of hats and scarves for them!
So, a new year and another chance to do better - not that I don't frequently try but I there are 2 times a year that I feel a stronger urge to be the person I would like to be - January and September. I have started the year moving forward with my goal of not adding to the stash. Not by not buying more yarn or fiber but by using the yarn and fiber as it comes in the door instead of letting it marinate.
First up - knit with some beautiful Silk Cloud, pictured above, by Shibui purchased from my LYS Gosh Yarn It that went right on the needles for a Horai wrap. I knit that pattern as a scarf for my sister (pictured below) and for my largest SnoBuddy. I loved the pattern and wanted one for me. This yarn is so soft and so alive I couldn't resist.
My December Club fiber from Spunky Eclectic got spun up during a Rock Day or Stl Distaff's Day celebration and is on the needles becoming Mukluks, a great pattern to show off handspun, handpainted yarn.
Weaving next post!
Promised project info! I was making good progress on spinning my Southern Cross Fibre semi sold colors for my Fiddle Head Mittens (as you can see) but seem to have gotten bogged down with holiday activities. Thanksgiving week at the condo was wonderful - the weather very good and the ocean is always fascinating to me. It was a record year for numbers - there were 21 at Thanksgiving. Dinner at my sister-in-laws. A three table meal! No pictures of the group or of the beautiful Children (there are now 3 with a forth arriving next month!) but I do have an ocean shot taken with my android tablet. You can see the grasses still flattened out from being washed over by the ocean during Sandy.

Now I have my artificial tree dug out and the huge box is sitting in the living area. Lots of disrupted piles to go through too. Hope to get back to spinning soon - Happy Holidays all!Lindahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09606687719768606817noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1177685125001431891.post-40798233681684507632012-11-13T14:02:00.001-05:002012-11-13T18:54:26.187-05:00What I need for a weekend away
I went away for a long weekend to the beach. It was a get together for weaving family and friends (although not everyone chose to weave). We had a great time! I discovered I need quite a list of tools for such a weekend. Believe it or not - I actually edited the original pile! It was billed as a weaving weekend so I brought my 16" Harp (folded up on the top right) and my brand new 10" cricket purchased at my local yarn store, Gosh Yarn It. I had borrowed and Easy Weaver loom to use in a demonstration, that came along so I could get that project finished and off the loom. I recently got that cute hand held Hockett Loom (leaning up between the Pocket Wheel and the Harp) so of course that had to come. I recently started doing more spindling so my spindle basket with assorted spindles came. The little niddy noddy would be handy if I did some spinning with the bag of sample fibers unspun yet from Fiber Fallout on my lovely Pocket Wheel. Couldn't leave home without one knitting project so a scarf in progress came along. This picture is main tools and doesn't include additional fiber, yarns, and other accessories!
The project on the Easy Weaver got finished thanks to my sister who did the rest of the weaving. I hemstitched and cut the project off the loom. It is waiting to be felted. I warped my Harp with the current Weaving Club project from Spunky Eclectic, the Cricket got a scarf warped and almost completely woven (I did finish it on Monday night). It now only needs wet finishing and maybe fringe twisting. I did spindle a little and knitted a little. The only tool that didn't get used was my Pocket Wheel but really, why not grab the tote that lives in and take it along just in case!!!!
Morgan enjoyed the down time at this all girls weekend too!
Our beach lost a lot of sand but on the whole we were so lucky. The dunes did what they were suppose to do and held back the majority of the waves.
Project info coming soon!
Can't believe we are at the end of October already but then I am constantly surprised how fast time seems to be moving. I have been spinning for my FiddleHead mittens - fiber photo (all Southern Cross Fibre) in last post. So far the off white and the dark orange are finished. Today I will start on the dark green. I did get this picture of the off white in progress - I think it may be the colorway "Frosted Almond". I am not sure if it shows well in this picture but spun the yarn looks so much creamier than in fiber form.
Some time ago I finished these 2 weaving projects - both from Spunky Eclectic Weaving Club. I have been slow to take pictures. The washcloths are just the size I like - not much bigger than my hand and I have really been enjoying using them.

The towels washed up so nice I plan on weaving more soon. So many projects I want to do and never enough time!

Sunday was a wonderful day at Rhinebeck (Sheep and Wool Festival in Rhinebeck NY) – I enjoyed myself so much! It was fun to have my cousin Elaine along for her first Rhinebeck trip. I go stay with her for MDS&W. It was lovely that she could join me this year for Rhinebeck. I took no pictures there, was sorry since it was such a spectacular day – sunny with a breeze that made the beautiful fall leaves float down but I enjoyed being there so much. The bus trip run by Gosh Yarn It! was fun, so nice to leave the driving to someone else. I did pretty well sticking to my no fiber or yarn rule as you can see by the picture above. Actually only bought the briar rose fiber in the basket. The lovely little bumps of semi solid fiber were given to me by David of Southern Cross Fiber! What a lovely surprise that was. I needed the basket to house my growing spindle collection. The latest was the lovely little .5 oz Golding that spins like a dream. Haven’t tried the Lucet yet but isn’t that bird’s eye maple lovely. A hat form and a 20 needle - needle felting thinger rounds off the grouping that came home with me.
The Golding and the Lucet wanted close ups!

I even have a plan for my beautiful semi solids – Fiddlehead Mittens. Here they are with the SCF Batt Club from July 2012 “Banksia” that I will use for the background – now to just spin them all!

I loved chatting with people, seeing the beautiful knitted or crocheted items that people wore, meeting in person people I chat with on line. It was so much fun!

I am so behind on taking pictures of my finished work never mind the fiber and yarn that is coming in every month I thought I would just jump in with 2 current projects. Baby hats are so satisfying to knit - they are quick even for a slow knitter like me.
The project pictured at the start of my post is the hat from a free pattern by Rebecca Bright "Acorn Swaddle Sac and Cap". It luckily knit up fast in the worsted and bulky wt yarns I purchased at Gosh Yarn It! .
I had started out making a "Leafy Newborn Beanie" for our niece Lauren's Baby shower. It is an adorable free pattern from Justyna Lorkowska. Well, something was off for me. I had some lovely green Classic Elite Yarns Liberty Wool purchased at Gosh Yarn It!

There were issues with laddering so I changed from my favorite double points to a cable needle which took care of the ladders (maybe it was because the hat was mostly pearl?) but ended up too big so was given to the 18 month old daughter of a co-worker. I will give this hat a go again, it is a sweet pattern. So happy the Acorn Cap came through for me!Lindahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09606687719768606817noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1177685125001431891.post-37371827757014851732012-10-02T11:12:00.000-04:002012-10-02T11:14:00.370-04:00Felting on a Ball!

Fall is always the beginning of the year for me, time to turn over a new leaf, to make resolutions! After falling off the blogging wagon I am climbing back on starting with felting on a ball. At this years Endless Mountain Fiber Festival I saw a demonstration, Making a Felt Hat on a Ball with Emily Rancier. I had seen Emily's creative hats before and I was inspired to give this felting method a try. It was so much fun! As I usually do, I like my results. Not quite finished yet - I need to find some finishing info but on the whole a very doable process.

I was lucky enough to get Kathy, a friend from my weekly Stitch & Spin group at Gosh Yarn It to model it for me. Thanks Kathy! Also thanks to Emily who not only provided a great demonstrated but patiently answered all my emails. I really need to take notes at demonstrations.
Last weekend was Fiber Fallout where I took my first every spinning classes. It was so exciting to learn from my spinning heroes! I was lucky enough to have classes with both Judith MacKenzie and Robin Russo. I also got to see some stunning work Daryl Lancaster and chat with her. The weekend has me stuffed with enough information to work with until it occurs again in 2 years. It was a wonderful experience.

Tour de Fleece has been occupying my time lately in addition to some traveling. I started out the first day of TdF at a conference in Baltimore. I just LOVE my little Pocket Wheel. Here it is in the window of my Hotel on the first day with a bit of Spunky Eclectic "Tossed Salad" on the bobbin and on the ledge - Also on the ledge some Hello Yarn "Smells of the Sea" waiting it's turn.

Both of those fibers were finished as singles.
I did my second textured yarn - coils - utilizing the information provided in Spin Art by Jaycey Boggs
That is just some of the spinning I have been doing and I haven't mentioned weaving which is going on too - with cousins last weekend in Virgina. It was a great weekend!Lindahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09606687719768606817noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1177685125001431891.post-82251075985809774682012-05-22T18:59:00.000-04:002012-05-22T18:59:25.846-04:00Sheep Sheep Sheep!
What a great time I had this year at what has become a traditional event weekend with my cousin, the lovely smiling woman next to the sign. For the first time since I have been going to MDS&W we spent time in the sheep barns. This made it doubly difficult to not by a fleece! Looking at the fleece on the hoof was so much fun - the variety is amazing. I am hoping participating in the Breed Study Club will give me a good foundation for buying fleece in the future. I do love the fleece that I have carded and prepped myself. So here are some of the lovely sheep I saw!
How can you resist those faces!
I am having problems with my computer at home - not working with the card reader so that has slowed me down with posts. So, to start getting caught up - my finished Breed Study for April. I went all out for the first month and did 3 preps for each fiber. Neither of them had a lot of lanolin and were easy to scour. I clumped each breed in some bags and scoured.

I always love spinning Wensleydale but this was my first experience with scouring it and the prep. I was surprised how short is was - due to 6 months growth I was told. It was so silky and lovely to touch! I combed, flicked and drum carded. Didn't like the drum carded stuff at all but I think I left too much "bad" stuff in - have to keep in mind - the sheep will grow more! I LOVE LOVE LOVE the combed prep (top sample) - perfect for the Wensleydale. I liked the flicked a lot too - I think I need more experience with flicking. I had to include a few washed but not prepped locks - this fiber just shines!

The Romney seems like an extremely versatile fleece. I combed, flicked and hand carded this one. My favorite was the rolags from the hand carding (middle sample) - so light and airy. Again, I think I would like the flicked fiber once I get more experience with the flicker, and combing was a nice prep for it too.
I do now have a small woven sample of each breed but no pictures yet. Both are nice but the drape and shine in the Wendsleydale sample is fantastic!Lindahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09606687719768606817noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1177685125001431891.post-44366901406273029232012-05-01T10:33:00.000-04:002012-05-01T10:33:50.233-04:00My Sweater from scratch - dying & blending the woolMy finished batts:
In an effort to get a red with depth I first kettle dyed the wool (the Corriedale Fleece I got at MDS&W in 2010 - my first fleece) with three colors of Greener Shades - Ruby red (main color), Fire Red and Black. This is the fiber on the left half of the below picture. The resulting color was good but there was not as much variety as I wanted so I dyed some more fiber with the Fire Red (top right corner) and some more with Amethyst Purple (bottom right corner). The main color was all carded first then I then drum carded the three together to blend the red of my dreams! Each little nest is about 8 grams main color, 4 fire red and 2 amethyst purple.
My first Fleece to Finish breed study club from the Spinning Loft! Planned on posting pictures in order but couldn't help showing my favorite first - Close up of scoured Wensleydale.
Here is what I got in the first box (already had the Romney wrapped in netting ready for washing so just a sample here!).

Inside the notebook there are color coded pages to mount samples on, information about the 2 breeds for this month and some general club info.
Here are some close up of the Wensleydale and the Romney before scouring. The Wensleydale averages a little over 4 inches when pulled out and the Romney over 5 inches.
I got right to work over the weekend and got all the fiber scoured – doesn’t it look beautiful! As I already mentioned, I especially love the Wensleydale, very silky to the touch and so lustrous.
By the end of the weekend I had all the Wensleydale prep done. No pictures of that so more in next post.Lindahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09606687719768606817noreply@blogger.com3
